The Learning behind Ganesha Visarjana
We all experience Ganesha Visarjana (immersion of the Ganesha idol in water) every year. On Ganesha Chaturthi, Lord Ganesha comes to stay at our house. For 10 days, he stays in our home like a family member, and then on the last day, we bid him farewell. What does Lord Ganesha want us to learn through this act?
During the 10 days of the Ganesha festival, we connect with Ganeshatattva (Lord Ganesha’s essence) through his idol. By the act of immersing the idol in water, Lord Ganesha teaches us that his essence is beyond his idol. It is a reminder for us that now the time has come to detach ourselves from Lord Ganesha’s idol and to learn to connect with Lord Ganesha’s essence. The same essence will come every month on Chaturthi (fourth day of the lunar fortnight in the Hindu calendar) to connect with you!
The message that Lord Ganesha wants to give us is that the immersed one is just the idol, but the essence of Lord Ganesha (Ganeshatattva) with which you can connect is permanent. To connect with this essence, connecting through the idol is a good beginning. But we should learn to detach from the idol and connect with the Ganeshatattva.
This is the same as if your earlier Guru were to leave their body, and if the universe were to send a new Guru into your life, you should learn to connect with the Gurutattva because the Gurutattva is common to both Gurus. The guidance you wish to receive has always been given by the Gurutattva. It is just that the Gurutattva was guiding you through a different idol before; now it is guiding you through another idol.
We can also view this as if the idol represents the body and the essence represents the soul. Even if we take care of the body very carefully, we should not get attached to the body. We should connect with the soul, which is present in the body and which will always be present. This is the message that Lord Ganesha wants us to have through the act of Ganesha Visarjana.
