Hard Work or Smart Work?

Today I’d like to share a story about a friend from my college. He was my classmate and he lived about 22 kilometers away. Despite the distance, he cycled to college every day. Sometimes he took the bus, but mostly he preferred cycling.

When I asked him why, he said that in the first two weeks of college, he’d tried commuting by bus, but the buses were always overcrowded—there was no space to sit, and barely enough room to stand. He’d reach home late and exhausted. So, he decided to switch to cycling, which he also enjoyed.

One Sunday, a classmate invited us to his home. He had bought a new VCR and wanted to show us the movie “Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.” We all watched and enjoyed the film, but my friend saw something more in it. The next day, he borrowed the cassette, rented a VCR, and watched the movie three more times.

Later, he told us that he was now reaching college using only 75% of the time and energy he used before. What changed? He had closely observed how racers in the movie cycled—leaning forward to reduce wind resistance, sipping water at intervals to maintain their stamina, and regularly oiling the chain for smoother riding. He adopted these techniques in his cycling. As a result, not only did he save time and energy, but he could also study after returning home—something he couldn’t do earlier due to fatigue.

So why did I share this story? Because it shows the relationship between hard work and smart work. Many people ask—what’s better? Hard work or smart work? The truth is: the tricks and techniques of smart work can only be realized while doing hard work. My friend first did the hard work by cycling every day, and then later discovered through a movie the techniques so that he could do smart work. In every field, this is true. Hard work is the foundation. If we keep on doing hard work with awareness and learning, hard work naturally evolves into smart work. You cannot directly do smart work. There is no alternative to hard work!
